Priyanka Gandhi Joins Wrestlers Protest, Asks Cops To Show FIR Copy
The Delhi Police, which functions under Amit Shah's Home Ministry, filed the two first information reports (FIRs) hours after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so.
New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met protesting wrestlers at Delhi's Jantar Mantar today to express solidarity with their demand for action against the alleged sexual harassment of women athletes by superiors. The wrestlers have been on a sit-in at Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaints of sexual harassment.
At the protest venue, the Congress general secretary hit out at the Delhi Police for not providing a copy of the First Information Report, or FIR, filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
"I don't have any expectations from the PM (Narendra Modi), because if he is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. Why the govt is trying to save him (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh," she said.
The Delhi Police on Friday filed two cases against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief after the Supreme Court ordered them to do so. One of the FIRs is over a complaint of sexual harassment by a minor, filed under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which gives no scope for bail.
The Delhi Police will pursue the case actively, sources said.
But despite the assurance of police action, the wrestlers said they will continue their sit-in protest demanding the "immediate arrest" of the WFI chief.
"We respect Supreme Court's order, but we don't have faith in Delhi Police. This fight is not for an FIR. This fight is to punish people like him. He needs to be in jail and stripped of his portfolios," the wrestlers said.
Earlier this week, Priyanka Gandhi had slammed the government, saying that the pleas of the sportspersons, who enhance the country's honour, were being ignored. She had asserted that "when the arrogance of a party and its leaders" is sky high, then such voices are crushed.
Congress leaders such as Bhupinder Hooda, Deepender Hooda and Udit Raj had also joined the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar earlier this week to express solidarity with them.
Mr Singh, who is also a BJP MP, welcomed the Supreme Court's order to file the police case into allegations of sexual harassment against him.
Mr Singh told reporters the wrestlers should have waited for the report of a committee that was tasked to look into the matter before they decided to sit on a protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
"I am happy with the judiciary's decision. The Delhi Police will investigate the allegations and I am ready to cooperate with them in every possible way. No one is bigger than the judiciary in this country. The order has come to file an FIR (first information report). The government had also said it had no objection to filing an FIR. I am not larger than the Supreme Court. I welcome the order," Mr Singh told reporters.

Today in Politics: PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi Campaign in Kerala; SC to Hear Kejriwal’s Plea Against ED Arrest
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi are set to make significant appearances in Kerala on Monday as part of their electoral campaigns leading up to the Lok Sabha polls.
Modi is scheduled to address two public meetings in Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur, aiming to bolster the BJP's presence in a state where it has historically struggled to secure Lok Sabha seats. The BJP's candidates include Union minister Rajeev Chandrashekar and actor Suresh Gopi. This marks Modi's sixth visit to Kerala this year, reflecting the party's determination to make inroads into the state's political landscape.
Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, will hold a public meeting in his constituency Wayanad, where he is seeking re-election for a second term. His visit is expected to galvanize support for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which had won 19 out of 20 seats in Kerala in the 2019 elections. Rahul's candidacy is seen as a strategic move to consolidate the Congress party's position in the state.
In a separate development, the Supreme Court is set to hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Kejriwal faces allegations of money laundering related to the Delhi excise policy case. The court's decision will have significant implications for the ongoing legal battle surrounding Kejriwal's arrest and the broader political landscape in Delhi.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders continue their campaign efforts across various states. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address rallies in Tripura and Manipur, while Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend a rally in support of BJP candidate Jitender Singh in Jammu and Kashmir. Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge, are also actively engaged in campaigning, underscoring the intense political activity leading up to the elections.

Rahul fighting an 'arrogant regime' that doesn't want questions related to people being raised: Priyanka
"Rahul Gandhi ji has ignited the beacon of questions related to the interests of the public in front of this arrogant regime," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said.
NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi is fighting the battle for truth and people’s interests against an “arrogant regime” which is adopting all tricks in the book to suppress the questions he is raising, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Friday after the Gujarat High Court dismissed her brother’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case.
While dismissing the plea, Justice Hemant Prachchhak noted that Gandhi was already facing 10 criminal cases across India, adding that the order of the lower court was “just, proper and legal” in handing over a two-year jail term to Gandhi for his “Modi surname” remark.
In a long Twitter post in Hindi, Priyanka Gandhi quoted the poem “samar shesh hai…(battle is yet to be over)” by Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ and launched a scathing attack on the Modi government.
Rahul Gandhi is fighting the battle for truth and people’s interests against this “arrogant regime”, she said.
“The arrogant regime wants that questions related to people’s interest should not be raised, the arrogant regime wants that questions that improve the lives of the people of the country should not be raised, the arrogant regime wants that they are not asked questions on inflation, employment, no voice is raised for the welfare of the farmers, there should be no talk of the rights of women, the question of labourers’ honour should not be raised,” Priyanka Gandhi said.
“The arrogant regime is trying every trick in the book to suppress the truth, it is adopting all means — ‘saam, daam, dand, bhed, chal, kapat (money power, punishment, discrimination, deceit)’ — to distract from questions related to the interests of the public,” she said.
Priyanka Gandhi asserted before truth, satyagraha and the power of the people, neither the “arrogance of power” will last nor the veil of lies over the truth will continue.
“Rahul Gandhi ji has ignited the beacon of questions related to the interests of the public in front of this arrogant regime,” she said.
For this cause, Rahul Gandhi is ready to pay any price and despite all the attacks and tactics of the arrogant BJP government, like a true patriot, he has not shied away from raising questions related to the people, the Congress general secretary said.
He is resolutely on the path of sharing the pain of the people, Priyanka Gandhi said.
“Truth will win. The voice of the public will win,” she asserted.
The Congress has said it is likely to move an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the Gujarat High Court order dismissing Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark.

Priyanka backs protesting wrestlers, says BJP's arrogance is "crushing voices"
Her remarks came after India's top wrestlers on Tuesday intensified their protest demanding the arrest of WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the government over the protests by top wrestlers here, and asked whether it wants to save the culprits in the matter.
The Congress general secretary also said that the pleas of the sportspersons, who enhance the country’s honour were being ignored, and asserted that “when the arrogance of a party and its leaders” is sky high then such voices are crushed.
Her remarks came after India’s top wrestlers on Tuesday intensified their protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and asserted that they won’t leave the protest site until the WFI president, who is facing sexual harassment charges, is arrested.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Delhi government and others on a plea by seven women wrestlers alleging non-registration of an FIR over their sexual harassment allegations against the WFI president, saying these are “serious allegations” requiring its consideration.
Expressing support for the protesting wrestlers, Gandhi said that sportspersons are the pride of the country as when they win medals despite all the difficulties and after working tirelessly, “their victory is our victory” and the whole country smiles.
“The victories of women players are bigger than the rest. They are sitting on the road next to Parliament with tears in her eyes. No one is listening to their complaint against exploitation that has been going on for a long time,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
“These girls with strong arms and pure hearts believed the government when it told them that there would be an inquiry. But the investigation did not happen. The question of punishment did not arise at all. Does the government want to save the culprits?” the Congress leader said.
Whose pressure is there on the Delhi Police, Gandhi asked.
She also questioned why Opposition leaders are being questioned by the same police on hearing the pain of a girl during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, but the pleas of the sportspersons who enhance the country’s honour are ignored.
Her remarks were in reference to a Delhi Police team last month querying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at his residence over his remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “women are still being sexually assaulted.”
The police team had asked him to provide information about the “victims” to take up their complaints.
“When the arrogance of a party and its leaders touches the sky, then such voices are crushed. Let’s support these sisters of ours. It is a matter of honour for the country,” Gandhi asserted.
The wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have also alleged that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief is now resorting to strong-arm tactics and trying to break the “victims” by issuing threats and offering bribes.
Former Haryana Chief Minister and senior Congress Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Congress leader Udit Raj and CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, who was stopped from joining the stir by the wrestlers in January, were welcomed by the wrestlers, at the protest site on Tuesday, a day after they had sought support from all quarters.

A 23-year-old rape victim set on fire by a gang of men, which included her alleged rapists, has died in a New Delhi hospital, prompting protests from opposition leaders who blamed the ruling party for failing to check incidents of violence against women.
The woman was on her way to board a train in Unnao district of northern Uttar Pradesh state to attend a court hearing over her rape when she was doused with kerosene and set on fire on Thursday, according to police.
She was airlifted to New Delhi for treatment later that day.
The attack, the second major case of violence against women in the past two weeks, has sparked public outrage in India.
The woman died on Friday after suffering a cardiac arrest, Dr. Shalabh Kumar, the head of burns and plastic department at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital told Reuters.
"She was having 95% burns," he said, adding the woman's wind pipe was burned and "toxic and hot fumes" had filled her lungs.
The woman had filed a complaint with Unnao police in March alleging she had been raped at gun-point on December 12, 2018, police documents showed. The woman named two local men, one of them was arrested by police, the other absconded.
Having been subsequently jailed, the alleged rapist was released last week after securing bail, police officer S.K. Bhagat said in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.
On Thursday, the rape victim was seized by five men, including the two people she had named in her complaint, and beaten, stabbed and set on fire, local media reported citing her statement to police.
Still ablaze, she walked nearly a kilometer, seeking help before finally calling the police herself, according to Aaj Taj TV news channel.
All five of the accused have been arrested and are in 14-day judicial custody, Vikrant Vir, superintendent of police, Unnao, told Reuters.
A fast-track court would hear the case and the guilty would not be spared, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.
In India, lengthy trials, often a result of fewer courts and judges, tend to delay convictions, leaving poor, disillusioned victims with little money and patience to pursue the case.
Also, long trials result in bails to the accused who often intimidate victims and their witnesses, and try tampering with evidence.
The victim's father has alleged that his family was been harassed and threatened by the family of the accused.
"We tried to seek protection as the accused and their family kept threatening my daughter and my family, but we received little help from the government," he said. "Now, every single accused should be either hanged or shot dead."
CRIME IN UTTAR PRADESH
Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state and has become notorious for its poor record regarding crimes against women, with more than 4,200 cases of rape reported there in 2017 - the highest in the country.
Opposition leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, general secretary of India’s main opposition Congress party, accused the Uttar Pradesh government, run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, of failing to curb crimes against women.
In an earlier incident in Unnao, a young woman had accused Uttar Pradesh lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her in 2017. In July last year, the victim and her lawyer were critically injured in a highway collision, when a truck hit the car in which they were traveling. The woman's two aunts, who were also in the car, were killed in the accident.
Sengar denies the rape and any involvement in the car crash.
On Friday, Indian police shot dead four men who were suspected of raping and killing a 27-year-old veterinarian near Hyderabad city, drawing applause from across the country angry over violence against women.
But many were also concerned that police had over reached in shooting the alleged suspects without any trial.
"What will it take (to end rapes)? Not the encounter of just the poor men who rape but swift arrest and certain punishment of all rapists, however powerful or closely related to the victim," said Karuna Nundy, a lawyer practicing at India's Supreme Court who was instrumental in shaping anti-rape laws in 2013.
"And that takes real change, it's not as easy as passing a legal amendment to increase sentencing."

Maharashtra Governor asks CM Uddhav Thackeray to prove majority tomorrow; Shiv Sena questions move
Jun 29, 2022 09:53 IST Mumbai (Maharashtra) , June 29 (Always First): Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has asked the Uddhav Thackeray government in the state to prove his majority on the floor of the House on June 30. The Governor has written to the state Assembly secretary to convene a special session of the State Assembly tomorrow with the only agenda of a trust vote against CM Thackeray. According to the notification, the session will commence at 11 am which will also be telecast live. Notably, this comes after Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the Governor on Tuesday night after returning from Delhi, and submitted a letter to him demanding an immediate floor test. "The Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly personally visited me at Raj Bhavan on June 28, 2022. I was briefed about the political situation in the State and thereafter the Leader of Opposition submitted a letter stating that Chief Minister has lost the majority in Vidhan Sabha. The letter submitted by the Leader of Opposition has further requested for a floor test to be conducted at the earliest so as to avoid any political bargaining by undemocratic means in the State of Maharashtra," said the notification by the Governor. According to the sources, a few independent MLAs had also sent an email to the registered email address of the Maharashtra Governor demanding an immediate floor test. "In this backdrop, an email dated June 28, 2022, was received by Raj Bhavan, Mumbai by 7 independent MLAs. The said letter states that the Chief Minister of Maharashtra has lost the confidence of the majority on the floor of the House thereby, making it imperative to conduct a floor test at the earliest," the notification stated. "As the constitutional head of the State. I must ensure that the Government functions with the support and confidence of the House. Thus, I have issued a communication to the Chief Minister calling upon to prove his majority on the Floor of the House on June 30, 2022," it further stated. Earlier this morning Eknath Shinde, visited the famed Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, where he is camping in a hotel along with other rebel Shiv Sena MLAs. Shinde said that he is ready for the floor test and will return to Mumbai tomorrow. "I will return to Mumbai tomorrow. I prayed for the welfare of the people of Maharashtra here at the temple," Shinde said after visiting the temple in Guawahati. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Wednesday said holding of the floor test amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court proceedings as the apex court is hearing the relating to the disqualification of 16 MLAs of the breakway camp of the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. "How can a floor test be asked for when the disqualification of 16 MLA has deferred by the Supreme Court till 11th July? How can these MLAs participate in the floor test till their disqualification status not decided and the other matters for which notice sent is subjudice?" she tweeted. "This would be contempt of court proceedings if floor test conducted despite the matter not getting final hearing in the SC," Chaturvedi added in her tweet. In a jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, senior Shiv Sena Minister Eknath Shinde and other rebel MLAs revolted against the party on June 20 and camped in Gujarat's Surat. Later, the rebel MLAs shifted base to a hotel in Guwahati. On Monday, a separate plea was filed by Shinde in Supreme Court court regarding the safety of the legislators who have challenged party chief and Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala heard the pleas on Monday. "This is the win of the Hindutva of Balasaheb Thackeray and the ideas of Anand Dighe," Eknath Shinde tweeted after the Supreme Court deferred the disqualification proceedings of rebel MLAs till July 11.
